Social Support and its Relationship to Quality of Life among Amputation Cases

Abstract:

Background: Social support is an important source of psychological and social support that a disabled needs in his daily life, as its size and level of satisfaction affect how the patient perceives the various stresses of life. Because of the neglect of amputations, it is necessary to study social support and its impact on their quality of life. Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate the social support and its relationship to quality of life among amputation cases in Kut City/ Iraq. Methods: The correlational study between two variables (social support and quality of life) was carried out on 150 participants who were attending Prosthetics Center in Kut City. The questionnaire's dependability was established through a pilot study, and it was subsequently presented to experts for validation. The information was collected through the use of interview techniques and evaluated using descriptive and inferential statistical analysis. Results: Out of 150 participants at mean age (38) were mostly married male and unemployment with low economic status. Findings show that (68%) of participants expressed a poor social support (. Social status, residents and income had been influence the social support (M ± SD=34.18±14.978); and (62%) expressed a poor quality of life (M ± SD=85.37±21.008). There were significant correlation between social support and quality of life (p=0.000); and there were significant effect of social support on quality of life for amputation cases (p=0.000). Conclusion: There are highly significant positively correlation between social support and quality of life due to quality of life among amputated cases were depends on their social support. Providing embellished social support by family, friends and community members for amputees so that they can face adversity and crises and lead their lives more effectively.
